Hostel Vittoria

The room had clean sheets and towels, and everything worked. Staff spoke only a little English, but we could manage to understand one another. Still, the cleanliness overall was questionable, and the inside was somewhat messy. We had a room on the second floor with a storage closet in the bathroom, which isn’t okay. Cleaning staff accessed it while we were there, and the smell from it was awful. On the way to the building there were drunk or high homeless people, and the smell was bad. I wouldn’t recommend girls walking there alone.

The rooms had plenty of space, but they were very dirty and smelled strangely of cigarettes. The bathroom was gross, the shower curtains were disgusting, and the tub was filthy and had already been clogged when we arrived. The neighborhood also felt very sketchy and unsafe. It’s close to Roma Termini, but there were lots of homeless people and the surrounding streets looked like a really bad area. We’re from Latin America and know lower-income neighborhoods, but this felt like another level. The host seemed sketchy too. He messaged us on WhatsApp beforehand and checked whether we were on our way, then repeatedly pointed out that we were late because our flight from Paris took a few minutes longer than expected. He asked for our passports at different points during the stay. When we asked why, he only said something about the police and gave no further explanation. We never left our passports with him unattended. This bad choice was the one thing that stopped us enjoying Rome. The city is beautiful and has lots to do, but staying here made us want to leave as soon as possible. With our tight schedule and budget near the end of our Eurotrip, we didn’t look for another place, even though we’d already paid and it wasn’t that cheap. Choosing this “hotel” was our mistake when it came to quality and cleaning, but feeling unsafe was not. I hope this review helps others avoid staying here.

I came to Rome to visit, but this was a terrible experience. In person, the place looks completely different from what it really is. Step out of the main door and there are several people who look like thugs. Think twice before booking, because they won’t refund your money, for obvious reasons.

I woke up covered in bug bites, found a nest under the mattress, and had an allergic reaction. To be fair, the owner handled it fairly: he moved us to another room and gave us 20 euros for ointment. The air conditioning was broken, the rooms were dirty, and the toilet wasn’t cleaned for two days. The neighborhood felt dodgy too. Choose another hostel!
