Hotel Santa Maria

I really enjoyed the calm feeling inside this beautiful church. There are so many lovely details, and taking my time to look around made it feel like a special, peaceful moment. I was also glad to find a small souvenir shop inside, a nice little surprise and a way to remember the visit. Worth stopping in.

We started our Rome sightseeing here, and it was a lovely place to step into. We went on a Monday evening when it was fairly quiet, which made the visit feel more meaningful. The Church’s deep heritage gave me a wonderful first glimpse of the city’s magnificent history. If you’d like a peaceful chance to take in some of the oldest gold mosaics without crowds, going in the evening is a great idea. A wonderful start to our trip.

Walking through Trastevere, this basilica makes a lovely stop and offers a quiet break from the busy streets. The interior is impressive and peaceful, with golden mosaics, stained glass, and architectural details that make the place feel special. There’s a lot of historical beauty to take in.

Inside Santa Maria in Trastevere, the apse brings together Christ and Mary on a throne, with Innocent II presenting a model of the church. The gold tesserae show his 12th-century rebuilding, while Cavallini’s later mosaics below tell Mary’s story with more human-looking figures. The Altemps chapel off the aisle contains the Madonna della Clemenza, an older Byzantine-style icon surrounded by Counter-Reformation plaster and doctrine. The whole church feels like a long, low statement about Mary, built with stone from elsewhere. Its nave is lined with twenty-two salvaged granite columns from the Baths of Caracalla. Their blunt entablatures sit above them because the columns are too short for grand arches. Look up and Domenichino’s gilded ceiling, with its Assumption, draws your eye toward the apse. Stepping in from the lively piazza makes the contrast especially striking.
