Hotel Moscatello

The room had old furniture and a strong musty, mouldy smell. The little refrigerator inside the closet didn't work and smelled mouldy too, and the bathroom had the same unpleasant odor. It made the stay uncomfortable. There were a few positives: the hotel is close to the station, metro and restaurants, and the white sheets and towels were clean and fresh. We arrived around 9 p.m. and stayed two nights. At check-in we asked about leaving our bags after checkout. The man said to ask the woman in the morning, which wasn't a definite yes or no. The next morning, after breakfast, we returned to find our door wide open. Maybe housekeeping had wanted to clean, but we'd only checked in the night before, so it seemed odd. When we asked the woman about luggage later, she said, “Tomorrow there will be another woman.” On checkout day we waited until that other woman arrived, around 11 a.m., only to be told they don't store luggage at all. Why couldn't they have told us on the first day? We wasted time waiting for an answer that was no.

Hotel Moscatello was a good value, with affordable prices for anyone on a budget. Our room and toilet were clean and looked after, so the stay was comfortable. It's close to the metro and train station, making it easy to get around, and the main sights are nearby too. A great option for visiting the area.

The room was very dated, with visible mould in the bathroom corners and hair stuck to the tiles. The toilet flush worked only intermittently. There was no kettle, and the corridor coffee machine had no milk. I asked another staff member for an iron; he said he'd tell housekeeping, but it never came. When I followed up, the owner said, “We don't have one.” It's hard to believe a hotel rated over 4 stars on Google has no iron or kettle. The arrival was frustrating from the start. The listing said reception was open 8 AM to 10 PM, but it seemed to operate sporadically. Months earlier we'd contacted the property about our arrival and were told we could store our bags. We got there around 10:30 AM, expecting somewhere shaded to wait or to leave luggage from 11, as stated. We rang the bell and got no answer. I called through the booking app, and the owner, Paulo, said someone would arrive by 11. Another couple arrived while we waited and also got no response to the bell. Eventually a staff member appeared and shouted at us about the calls. She said it was a national holiday and she was doing us a favour by letting us drop our bags. She kept raising her voice for several minutes and scolded us for not using the elevator, even though nothing said which floor the hotel was on. We had checked all the messages and found no clear indication it was on the third floor. Another family waiting at reception had also been calling and got similar hostility. Our room was ready earlier than expected, but the staff member's behaviour had already left a bad impression. She seemed more polite later, but the damage was done. We told the owner what happened. He offered complimentary drinks or ice cream, but after that encounter we just wanted to move on. The online rating of 4.1 felt very misleading and didn't match the service or facilities we experienced. If we'd known what it was like, we'd have chosen somewhere else. I wouldn't recommend it or stay again.

The room was filthy and smelled of cigarette smoke, with no soap, shampoo or anything to wash your hands. I didn't feel clean or comfortable at all. For €120, a dirty, smelly room in a neighborhood that felt ugly, sketchy and unsafe is outrageous, even with Rome's high prices. Check-in was unsettling. A creepy guy insisted the €4 city tax had to be cash; when I said I only had a card, he claimed there'd be a €2 card fee, which felt shady. His odd way of showing me around made me nervous. The lights in the room also switched on randomly when people passed in the hallway. Disgusting facilities, a horrible location and an awful vibe. This place feels like a total scam. Don't stay here.
