Easy to see and pretty cool. The gate was shut, though, so we couldn't walk up to it.

What’s fascinating about the Porticus Aemilia is how it still carries the weight of modern life above it. Much of it lies buried beneath Testaccio, with surviving sections along Via Marmorata and in some building basements. Excavations have uncovered thick walls, old floors, and traces of stairs between the warehouse aisles. Today, only glimpses of the structure are visible while buses, cars, and residents pass overhead. Built around 193 BC by Marcus Aemilius Lepidus and Lucius Aemilius Paullus, this was a huge practical operation for feeding Rome. Ships unloaded food from the Tiber, including grain from Sicily and Egypt, wine from Campania and northern Italy, and oil from Baetica. It could store and redistribute supplies for a city of more than a million people. The scale is hard to imagine: about 487 meters long and 60 meters wide, with 294 tuff pillars arranged into seven parallel aisles and nearly 29,200 square meters of covered space. Nearby Monte Testaccio was built up over centuries from millions of discarded amphora fragments, many of them used for oil. Those pieces still give archaeologists clues about Roman trade. The warehouse was made for efficiency rather than grand display, and it has endured beneath the neighborhood for over two thousand years.

The remains sit in a small garden between buildings, and there are marble benches, though the area seems unusable and is closed even on some days when visits are supposed to be possible. From behind the bars, you only get to see a short section of the southeastern wall. It’s an imposing and interesting structure, but I wouldn’t make a special trip for it if you can’t get closer. It can also be mistaken for an aqueduct. This is just a small surviving part of the Porticus Aemilia, a tuff complex about 487 meters long and 60 meters wide, once running parallel to the Tiber. Its footprint reached the area of today’s Via Amerigo Vespucci, Via Marmorata, Via Beniamino Franklin, and Via Giovanni Branca. Inside, 294 pillars divided the building into seven long rows and around 50 aisles, with small overlapping vaults above roughly 25,000 square meters of storage space, or horrea. Marcus Aemilius Lepidus and Lucius Aemilius Paullus built it in 193 BC, and the structure was named after them. The surviving wall is made of peperino and tuff from Monteverde and the Aniene. Openings in the front wall brought light into the aisles. The piers and stairs that once led down to the river are gone. Useful information? Leave a like and check out my reviews of Rome and beyond.

These days, you can find the remaining walls along Via Rubattino, Via Beniamino Franklin, and Via Florio. They stand from about 3 to almost 10 meters high, over a stretch of several dozen meters, giving some sense of how the building was laid out. The so-called Porticus Aemilia was a vast warehouse beside Rome’s ancient Port of Emporium. It had separate storage areas and broad steps for boats arriving with goods. Back in the 2nd century BC, it measured roughly 500 meters long and 60 meters wide. I reviewed this historic site several years ago, but with more than 1,200 places covered in my reviews, I wanted to repeat what I know about it.
