The apartment wasn't clean when I arrived. I had to wash the dishes and clean the bathroom fixtures, stove, table, and sink myself. There was dirt and hair in the furniture and throughout the silverware drawer, including on the utensils. After going out for a few hours, I came back around 1:00 AM and started seeing live cockroaches in the kitchen, with dead ones scattered around the house. I later found out they were “furniture cockroaches,” yellow and black flying beetles with long, thin antennae. By 1:30 AM there were too many, so I went out to buy insecticide. When I sprayed behind the kitchen cabinet, dozens came out, including larger ones that could fly. It was clear there was a nest under or behind it. Some had spread outside the kitchen: I found them on the bedroom wall by the headboard and in the bathroom. By then it was 2:30 AM or 2:30 AM, and the situation was unbearable. I called dozens of hotels before finding one I had to book for at least two nights at €80 per night, then another two nights to cover my time in the city, for a total of €320. In the morning I contacted the owner, who kept insisting this had never happened before. I later read a July review mentioning cockroaches. A nest certainly doesn't form in two days, even though the owner repeatedly pointed out that there had been another reservation a few days earlier and those tenants hadn't noticed anything. The only positive part was getting an immediate refund I requested for two of the four hotel nights, plus the food I'd bought that was now useless. Booking.com responded quickly, contacted the owner, and started the cancellation and full refund process.
