I can only review what the Teatro Valle has been and what it represents, while hoping it will be restored to its former glory. This is considered the oldest modern theater in Europe, built in 1727 to a design by Tommaso Morelli, assisted by Mauro Fontana. It was avant-garde for its time, and despite many renovations and updates, it remains an important artistic landmark. Valadier’s major renovation in the early 19th century gave it its current elegant neoclassical facade and beautiful auditorium, and it was listed as a protected historic building. The city acquired it from ETI, the Italian Theater Authority. After a short reopening, it’s closed again for extensive renovation and safety work. The project is also preserving medieval flooring uncovered during restoration. It’s expected to finish in 2026, with the theater apparently set to return for the 2026/2027 fall season. Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly. For four years it has borne the name of Franca Valeri. With her witty sense of humor, she might smile to know that she lives on in the memory of this historic Roman monument. Teatro Valle is slightly smaller than nearby Teatro Argentina, but five years older. If this was useful, leave a like and check out our other reviews of Rome and beyond.

Great news: the theater is due to reopen to the public on October 16, 2026, with Luigi Pirandello’s “Six Characters in Search of an Author.” The 11 million euros in work covers electrical and technology systems, fire prevention, accessibility improvements, and renovated dressing rooms. It also includes conservation work on the auditorium, public and circulation spaces, stairs, and facade.

Teatro Valle was occupied in 2011 after it closed amid a sale by the Italian Theatre Authority. It’s one of Rome’s best-known theaters, inaugurated 300 years ago, and the place where Donizetti’s operas and Pirandello’s “Six Characters in Search of an Author” premiered. Now owned by the city, it’s undergoing restoration planning. I hope the city handles the work well.

I’ve seen dozens of shows at the Valle over the past forty years, and it’s ridiculous to describe it as some off-the-grid space. This is a 300-year-old theater with a Valadier facade, not a “left-wing theater” run by a few well-meaning actors. The so-called mayor Alemanno closed it in 2011, twelve years ago, and in 2014 the brave, highly respected theater workers who stopped it being turned into who knows what were evicted. It’s falling apart, and in this culturally dead city I see no serious effort to save it. If you don’t know the place, please don’t write nonsense!

It’s closed for restoration, with reopening expected in 2024.
