Turner Hotel

We booked two rooms for three nights in August. The single was tiny, as expected, while the twin was small but all right. Both had been advertised with air conditioning, but only the twin had it. In the single, an ineffective fan just pushed the hot air around. Breakfast was edible, with an unusual vegetable option that seems common on our trip around Italy, plus plenty of pastries and good coffee. The twin room's shower was the worst part. It looked like an old enclosure had broken and someone put a curtain over what was left. The curtain was really grimy, and clearly hadn't been changed or washed.

The staff were friendly and helpful, and we had no issues with them. For us, the room was just somewhere to rest, so its problems weren't a big deal at the basic price we paid. We booked a three-night, two-day Rome package through Love Holidays and got room 410, an "economy room" at the back on the fourth floor. It was reasonably clean, but the bed squeaked badly on the left, the minibar was just an empty fridge, the air conditioning didn't work and had no dial, and only three TV channels came through. The hotel feels tired and could use an upgrade. The reception has what I'd call a vintage Italian look, and the carpets in the hallways and passages are threadbare in places. Getting into the city was easy, though it's about a 30-minute walk to the centre. There were plenty of e-bike scooters and bikes around if you felt like trying the Italian traffic.

The room and bathroom were small but worked fine, and the baroque decor added something to our holiday. The view from our window was disappointing, though, since it looked onto the elevator shaft. There's a bus stop just up the road and some lovely restaurants very close by. The staff were friendly and helpful, and we enjoyed our two nights here.

There are a couple of nice restaurants nearby, especially on the road around the corner. The trees outside our window were pleasant, though it got busy early and there was traffic noise from the junction by the wall. The hotel is just outside the wall, with an easy bus ride in on, hmm, maybe the 90 or the 2. I can't remember. Walking to the ruins took me 20 to 30 minutes, which was no trouble since I walk a lot. The room had enough space to sleep and get ready, and there were extra blankets, which I needed. The beds were small, as twin rooms often are in Italy. Staff wanted to leave them until the morning, but we didn't want to share a double, so they did come and change them. Breakfast was small, self-service, and nice: cheese, ham, good rolls, yogurt, cereals, a few hot items we didn't eat, maybe egg, plus little tarts, cakes, and pastries. There was a self-serve coffee machine and hot water for tea. Check-in staff were functional, but didn't show much concern when my friend fell on the awful stretch of missing cobblestones near Trefi fountain. Maybe the language barrier was part of it. Her face was black and blue and covered in dressings. Be careful, folks, the streets are in much worse shape than when I last visited about 10 years ago. On our last night, the bathroom had a major leak. Staff gave us towels to mop it up, but nobody came to help in the room. I also woke up with three little spots of blood on my ankle after feeling a bite there the first night. I couldn't see anything in the bed, and it only happened that one night, so who knows. I didn't tell the staff. I'd pick a higher-star hotel next time. I think this one was a three or four?
