Hotel Val

Really clean rooms and lovely, accommodating service. The decor is an unusual blend of traditional and modern. It can feel far from the village, though it's also close to the trails. The food was good too :)

The family and staff who looked after us were friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere was fantastic. Hotel Val is in Wolkenstein, surrounded by the Dolomites, with the centre about a 15-minute walk away and the lifts within walking distance too. Our room was well set up and equipped. We had breakfast and dinner included, and both were well served. Everything we ate was delicious, and we enjoyed every minute of our three-day stay.

We were starving after a long hike in Selva, and the Utia a bit higher up was full and hectic. Hotel Val is smaller, but it was relaxed and had room for us. We had lunch there, ordering beef Gulasch with canederli and pasta with mushroom sauce. The portions were generous and served in a rustic style. We were hungry, sure, but the food really was excellent.

After a few days, with about 10 guests there, the place started to feel like family. Other guests shared helpful tips about places to go, and during hiking season I changed some of my plans based on their advice. I stayed four nights, and breakfast and dinner were cooked from scratch each day. You're meant to arrive at the restaurant at the set meal time, but they still accommodated me when I was late twice. I tried the house wine for the first two nights, then chose a couple of the better bottles they carry. Great hotel and a great base for a holiday.
