The host was really kind. We had got our arrival time wrong, and when they realized we'd be late, they made sure someone could meet us with the key. For the price, it was great, and I'd stay again when I'm back in Venice. It's a simple place with the basics, but our room was clean, the sheets and pillows were good, and towels were provided. The shared bathroom was spotless, though another toilet or separate showers would have helped. It felt like a household bathroom, so sharing it with others on the floor was a bit awkward. Still, we knew it was shared and came prepared. The location is handy, near several bars and a waterbus stop, although getting there with lots of bags could be tough: it's about a 30-minute walk from Santa Lucia station.

The check-in staff member was extremely rude. We were with our 17-year-old child, and although the terms say guests must be 18 or older, that rule seems misleading when a minor is accompanied by their parents. I could understand it for a 17-year-old staying alone, but that wasn't our situation. They showed no concern that our child now had nowhere to stay, and the office threatened to call the police without listening to us, claiming it was Italian law. I felt the desk worker's attitude may have been directed at our family's Sikh ethnicity. We had to find somewhere else to stay, which meant extra expense. A very bad experience.

The location is a real plus, with plenty of good places to eat and things to do nearby. The place itself is just okay and very noisy. There's only one bathroom with a toilet for everyone, though we knew that going in. Come for the price and the location, that's about it.

Getting here is easy for most of the way from the train, basically one road, but maps gets confused near the end. At the bridge, turn right, find the alley, then follow it for about 60 meters until the red umbrellas. We had a big room and shared a bathroom with just one other room. I never saw those guests, and the bathroom was cleaned at least daily, so it wasn't a problem. We were on the third floor with no lift, also fine for us. The bar downstairs opens at 7 pm and has an English pub feel; the people there were nice, and the bar didn't bother us. I think it's a local spot. The shared kitchen could use a stove and utensils, and having a fridge in the room would make a big difference.

I wouldn't stay here again. It was below average, though good value, and Frank was helpful at times. My room was okay and looked onto a canal, but it was noisy. Four rooms, about eight guests, shared one bathroom, which got frustrating, especially in the morning. Since my room was right beside it, the cleaner woke me around 7 to 7:30 every day. I don't know why they clean before checkout, during the busiest time for showers and toilet use. Check-in was more complicated than it needed to be, though that seems common in Italy. Frank was strict about lots of rules. Booking.com had sent my short name, Jeff instead of Jeffrey, and the wrong number of guests, even though I was traveling alone. That stressed him out and he got a bit aggressive at first, but we sorted it out. I could see him throwing someone out and keeping their money if they didn't go along with things or expected friendly customer service.
