Corte Vecchia

We liked our stay. The room was simple but clean, and the host was friendly. We were there in August 2023, and it was an easy, enjoyable walk to everything we wanted to see. A cute little place for a short stop, you get what you pay for 👍

I travel a lot and have stayed in many places in Italy, usually with happy experiences, but this was a very different one. The address they gave me was wrong and led to a gallery across the river. Nobody nearby knew the place, so I searched by its name and found a different address. While I was trying to sort it out, nobody answered my calls or texts. I waited outside for a long time until a man finally showed up with a key and took me to the room. It was a basement room under the stairs, right by the entrance and the only room downstairs. I asked for another room or a refund, but neither was possible. He said the property had new management and he only worked there, so I ended up staying. You could hear everything upstairs, and other guests kept banging the entrance door. There were a couple of locked storage rooms, peeling ceiling paint, and a broken light hanging down. I'm not tall, but even I hit my head on the sloping toilet ceiling while washing my hands. No bath mat was provided, so the floor flooded whenever I showered and became slippery. At night there were lots of mosquitoes, and the windows had no screens. I was desperate to sleep, and even a couple of days after leaving, I still had bites all over my face and body. The owner being non-local seemed to come with a very different attitude and standards. I hope this helps other people avoid the same trap.

Getting in can be tricky because of the key, so contact the owner before you arrive. The room was clean and the location is great, only a five-minute walk from the dock. It’s a small, family-run B&B, and the bathroom water pressure is low.

Corte Vecchia is a lovely little B&B on a quiet street with a very local feel, close to the Grand Canal. One of the nearby small bar-restaurants is actually among the highest-rated in Venice. Great location, and I can definitely recommend staying here.
