The Lucio Fontana sculpture gallery was striking and well worth the visit. I also enjoyed sitting in the garden for a while by the poignant graves of Peggy and her dogs. The museum is a peaceful place, with artwork outside in the garden as well as inside the galleries. My wife and I liked most of the work, which Peggy Guggenheim collected many years ago, and there are pieces by famous artists including Picasso. One small gallery wasn’t to our taste. In my opinion it was the worst of modern art, basic and uninspiring, with one picture that looked like plain graph paper. Still, the rest offered plenty to enjoy. The cafe was closed for refurbishment when we visited. There are toilets in the reception area. It was a lovely way to spend a couple of hours.

Peggy's former palazzo on the Grand Canal makes for a refreshing modern art stop amid Venice’s Renaissance focus. The intimate rooms look over the water, with highlights including Picasso, Pollock, Dalí, and Magritte. Outside, the sculpture garden is peaceful, with Calder mobiles and Giacometti figures. Don’t miss Peggy’s grave with her dogs. Audio guides add to the visit. Entry was around 17 euros, and it felt less crowded than other museums. The terrace cafe is a tip for canal views. Allow 1-2 hours for an enjoyable change of pace.

The galleries are full of major modern art names, from Pollock and Miró to Magritte and Calder, but the place still feels personal because Peggy’s presence runs through her former home by the Grand Canal. We paid €16 each, which felt well worth it. Before looking around, we had coffee and chocolate cake in the café. The cake was pretty ordinary, though the view helped. It’s a compact museum, full of history, and one of my favorite museum visits in Venice.

The tour guide was excellent, and the history made the visit especially interesting. Peggy Guggenheim supported avant-garde artists in Europe and the US through the 1930s and 1940s, often buying their work before they were widely known. Her collection spans Cubism, Surrealism, Futurism, and Abstract Expressionism. She lived in the unfinished 18th-century Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Grand Canal, and began opening her home to the public during the Venice Biennale in 1951, keeping the viewing experience informal and domestic. A must-see for anyone interested in 20th-century contemporary art.

The garden’s modern sculptures are a lovely part of the visit, alongside the avant-garde paintings. Inside Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, right on the Grand Canal, the collection covers 20th-century movements such as Cubism, Surrealism, and early Abstract Expressionism. There are works by Picasso, Kandinsky, Mondrain, Duchamp, and plenty of others. For modern art lovers visiting Venice, this is a must.
