The Palace 5613

The main thing that bothered us was privacy. After we checked in and went out to explore, we returned to find someone had folded and hung the clothes we’d left on the bed. We hadn’t asked for that, and the towels and sheets had already been prepared when we arrived, so there didn’t seem to be a reason for anyone to enter. I’m sure there was no bad intent, and it may have been meant kindly, but it felt like a privacy breach. The experience may suit someone who likes the feeling of staying with a very caring older relative. The location is great and it’s good value, with whimsical decor. We had the room with a separate bathroom outside, which was a little tricky but manageable. There are two flights of stairs, and the water traffic outside can be noisy. The landlord’s mother-in-law lives on the other side of the floor, speaks little English, and insisted on making us a charming breakfast.

Anna was lovely and accommodating, and her mum made us breakfast every morning. There’s a large terrace you can use any time. Our deluxe room had a big, comfortable bed, large windows that opened for cool air, and a huge closet for bags and clothes. The bathroom was spacious, with both a shower and bath, and there’s a shared bar fridge for a few items. The palace is in a great spot near places to eat, Rialto Bridge and San Marco Square. The room was clean and very well placed for seeing Venice. I’d recommend staying here. Light sleepers may want earplugs for the boats on the canal, and be ready for four flights of stairs. At least you can work off all the gelati!

The building dates from the 15th century and is in good shape. It’s only two minutes from Rialto, beside a small but busy canal, and it was fun watching everyday life in Venice from the window. The staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was small, with one single and one double bed. It had a nice bathroom with a bath and shower, plus a teapot, cups and a couple kinds of filter tea. I’d definitely recommend this place for a couple or small family.

Breakfast was homemade and served on a huge terrace full of flowers, and the owners were kind. We had five amazing days in a unique old palace, in a great location overlooking a canal. It was exactly what we were looking for.
