La Riserva di Castel d'Appio

The views are breathtaking, and the owners and staff were lovely, friendly and courteous. They clearly want to give good service. But beyond that, I struggle to understand why other recent reviews seem so different from our one-night stay as a couple. There was very little comfort, and the beautiful setting seems to be expected to make up for everything else. The photos look like they may be from before the turn of the millennium, when the decor and facilities might have been passable. Since then, it looks as if there has been no investment in the building. Everything feels worn out and badly overdue for major maintenance. Maybe a place can become oddly iconic as it decays. This might be one of those cases, but be prepared for an authentic Addams Family mansion feel, with incredible views. I hesitated to write this after seeing the hotel's combative responses to reviews instead of acceptance. I thought honest feedback might give those responsible a chance to improve.

The restaurant food was fresh and tasty, and the view was amazing. Getting up the hill to the hotel is a challenging drive, so be prepared. We stopped for one night on our way to Toscana. The room was comfortable, though I'd have liked it to be bigger, and the bathroom was small, as is typical of Italian style. A peaceful spot for a couple of days.

We've stayed here five times now and have loved every minute. The staff are so friendly and make the stay even better. Dinner on the patio is excellent, with amazing views, and breakfast is very good too. The kids love the pool. We only wish we could stay longer.

It feels like arriving at an oasis in the mountains. The views are incredible and the food was delicious. We had an early flight the next morning, and being within an hour of Nice airport made this hotel a perfect choice. Such a hidden gem!
