The island setting is beautiful, with impressive views of both the sea and volcano, and the location is clearly the hotel’s strongest point. But the stay fell short of what I’d expect from a four-star place. Our room wasn’t properly cleaned, and despite booking for three people, there was no linen for my child’s bed. My child had to sleep with me, and there wasn’t even a mattress cover. At dinner, the food was mediocre and the fish seemed to be frozen, which felt especially disappointing on an island. We’d booked during midsummer and were promised a children’s menu, but nothing had been prepared. The staff had to find something at the last minute, and our first dish didn’t arrive until around 10 PM, after our two-year-old had fallen asleep. The staff were generally okay, though the waitress serving us wasn’t very friendly. The restaurant service added to the disappointment. With the lack of care and attention to detail, I don’t feel the hotel met four-star standards, and based on our stay, I can’t recommend it.

I had five amazing days here. The garden, room, and pool were beautiful, with a lovely view of the volcano and natural surroundings. The beach is only 20 meters away, and the hotel has private beach beds. The bed was very good, the AC worked well, and breakfast was delicious. I also really enjoyed lunch at the pleasant restaurant right by the sea. Thanks to Valentina and Stefania at reception for being so kind and helpful. I warmly recommend Maria del sud!

The gardens and location are lovely, and the staff were generally great. Craig in particular was exceptional and a real asset. The rooms are good, though rusty guttering with large holes spoils the look, and our sheets weren’t changed during our two-week stay. Breakfast was poor in both choice and quality, while the restaurant was more expensive than nearby places. There was no kids’ menu, so children got adult portions. The biggest issue was that the hotel didn’t match what its website led us to expect. It didn’t feel set up for families. The playground was dirty and neglected, the pool’s jacuzzi areas didn’t work, and the pool bar was rarely open. When it was open, it was very expensive. We have children aged four and five, and there was no childcare at all, so although we got a change of scenery, we couldn’t really relax. It might suit a couple without children, but with kids I’d choose somewhere that’s put more thought and investment into the whole family.

The food was amazing, a real taste of Italy, and Samuel the Bartender made excellent drinks. The resort itself is beautiful, and the staff were friendly and so helpful, with outstanding service. They exceeded all our expectations. We highly recommend Mari del Sud and will definitely be back.

The waiters really made the difference. They were all friendly, professional, and kind. Special thanks to the South American guy, Antony, if I remember correctly, who was especially cheerful and kind. The hotel is nicely located close to Vulcano’s best beach. The bar and pool were nice, and our room was super cozy. It was an amazing experience!
