Showa Retro Spa Hotel Takasago Onsen

I’ve stayed at more than 50 onsen ryokan across Japan, and this was the worst. The onsen itself was interesting, but the rest fell below standard. During our five nights, they cleaned my room only once. Breakfast was a very simple buffet, and dinner was mediocre, especially since I’d paid extra for their best dinner plan. The sake choice was extremely limited, just three small bottles. The front desk staff were also unfriendly. I definitely won’t come back.

The food was simple and delicious, and the staff were excellent. They didn’t speak much English, but they appreciated my trying to use the little Japanese I know. The Onsen is underrated. It’s dated, though that gives the place some hidden charm, and there are lots of pools to choose from, each with its own specific benefit.

The onsen had an amazing range of water temperatures, and it was clean with a modern overall design. I highly recommend it to anyone around Asahikawa.

I only visited the onsen, and it was great. Most onsens are too hot for me to get into comfortably, but this one has lots of small baths at different temperatures, so there’s something to suit everyone. More than ideal for me.
