Tenku Hotel Kairo

My work manager suggested stopping on Shodoshima during our trip from Tokyo toward western Japan, and I’m so glad we did. The hotel’s view felt magical, and dinner at the restaurant was a real treat. Everyone working there was extremely polite and helpful. I’ll miss this place.

A lovely hotel on Shodoshima. The staff were friendly and worked around our dietary restrictions really well. They also offer quite a few services, including a hotel shuttle, late-night snacks, and drinks.

The ocean-view room is the one I’d recommend choosing. The public bath, meals, and transport service all helped make the hotel experience great.

The staff made a strong impression: they were friendly, polite, attentive, and helpful, and their English was good enough for foreign travelers. The service felt like great value and made for a really enjoyable stay on this island. The hotel looks out over Angel Road, which you can see from most rooms. The south-facing view catches both sunrise and sunset without much glare. There are large rooms in both Japanese and Western styles. The Japanese rooms have tatami and excellent shikifutons, a nice way to try traditional Japanese sleeping if you haven’t before. You can reach Angel Road in under ten minutes by taking the stairs from the front entrance to the main road, or follow the winding route used by the shuttle. Some parts of the staircase are steep and rusty, but it’s manageable. The hotel also offers free shuttle pickup and drop-off at the Port. Near the top of the hotel, the smaller, simple onsen has a great view of the local area. It’s a relaxing place to enjoy the hot water and ocean scenery. The balconies and chair-lined terrace are lovely spots to sit in good weather too. Meals are traditional Japanese dinners with several courses, including plenty of local specialties. Shodoshima is known for its olives, and olive oil and olives show up in a number of dishes. It’s an excellent hotel for anyone visiting Tonosho / Shodoshima who wants a higher-class Japanese or Western stay.
