The hot spring water is salty and rich, and soaking in it was deeply soothing. At dinner, you can have alcoholic drinks without a limit, and karaoke is free. Both dinner and breakfast are buffets with lots of choices and views over Atami’s townscape. The staff are welcoming and kind, and the value for the price is excellent. It’s a little way from Atami Station, but there’s a free shuttle between the station and Kinjo-kan. If you’re staying in Atami, this is the hot spring inn I’d recommend most, though it’s almost too good to share.

The hotel is old, but the rooms are spacious, and the onsen is large and well maintained. I would have rated it 3.5 or 4 stars if my towel and slippers hadn’t been stolen while I was bathing. I had to walk barefoot to the lobby for another pair of slippers. At least my robe was still there. Someone had also rummaged through the robe basket beside mine. I found another person’s clothes in my basket alongside my own. If the thief only wanted a towel, they could have taken mine and left. There was no need to go through everyone’s belongings. When I reported it, the front desk gave a weak apology and another pair of slippers, but otherwise did nothing. I felt unsafe for the rest of my stay, and unfortunately I won’t use this hotel again.

The place is old, but clean and well kept, and the service is good. The buffet dinner was very average. They run a shuttle to and from Atami station during check-in and check-out hours.

It was 36 degrees on the summer day I first tried a hot spring in Japan. Switching between the hot spring water and the properly cold ice pool felt really comfortable. My skin was smooth afterward.
