This place has such good energy. When the weather gets cold, it's time for hot springs, and Momiya is a glorious way to enjoy them. I've stayed in three different room types, and they've all been incredible. Yesterday's suite had two ensuite toilets, a meeting room or dining room, a coffee nook, four different window views, and my own little garden. The traditional food was exquisite and incomparable. When I said it was probably what the Imperial family ate every day, I was told they don't eat as well as this. The old hotel has so much tradition and grace, and modern plastic and stainless steel don't compare. I've also stayed at the island's only 5 star, intercontinental, and nothing comes close to this. The hostess and proprietor, who was raised here, recently hosted the most famous Japanese chess contest. There are two bathing rooms that alternate by day. Prices are an eighth of intercontinental's, which is extremely inconveniently located. It's ten minutes to Beppu's eating and drinking district and central station. If you want to experience traditional Japan and Japanese ways, this is the place.

You can see the owner's care in every corner, and her hands-on, tailored service was amazing. I especially loved the garden view and spacious room, and the bedding cushion is unforgettable. It's a quiet, serene place where you can stay peacefully. I'll definitely come back next time.

Four days here left me feeling completely relaxed. It’s a little piece of old Japan, simple and elegant, and the best stay I’ve had in Japan in 33 years. The innkeeper was kind, helpful, spoke reasonable English, and kept us laughing. I’m so glad I got to have this lovely experience. Arigatoh gozaimashita!!!

The bath was quiet both at night and in the morning, and I had it to myself each time. During the morning soak, I spotted a scarab beetle in the sink and had to carry it outside, lol. I also loved breakfast in the separate dining room, especially the dried flounder grilled over a small charcoal grill. Everything was just right, and there was plenty to eat. I stayed at Momiya at the end of August 2025 after booking through Ikyu.com. I needed a one-night stay with dinner and breakfast, arriving after 6pm after taking the last hovercraft from Oita Airport to Oita Port and traveling from Oita Station to Beppu Station. Momiya served dinner at 7pm, so it worked out. The inn is under a ten-minute walk from Beppu Station, up a gentle hill and beyond a retro public hall in a residential neighborhood. The building’s layout was intriguing, with signs of additions and renovations over the years. Since it was still midsummer and I was sweaty, I bathed before heading back to my room, where dinner was served. That felt like just the right bit of luxury. I especially liked the dashi, though it sometimes made me feel a little queasy. At check-in I’d only glanced at the materials about the 2024 Meijin Tournament in Beppu. After dinner, I looked through them properly, and the landlady patiently explained every page in the clear folder. I had to rush out at the end because of the bus schedule, which was a shame. I’d like to return. Thank you for the hospitality.

I took these photos around early 2024 while visiting to check the place out, so I didn’t stay overnight. The old-fashioned character sits nicely alongside the modern feel of the lighting and tables. It seemed like a space I could recommend, and I hope the photos help show the facilities and amenities.
