I stayed four nights during a two-week trip to Japan, starting out in Chiba because it’s closer to Narita airport than Tokyo. The hotel gives a luxurious impression, especially in the lobby. My room was very good too, though it did feel a little old. The bathroom had separate hot and cold faucet controls instead of a newer single dial. I only bought breakfast on my final morning since it wasn’t included. There were traditional Japanese dishes and western-style options, and the breakfast venue had a very good view. The hotel is fairly well placed, but the nearest monorail station is about one kilometer away. I’m used to Japanese hotels being right by stations, so that felt inconvenient, and I took taxis to and from Chiba Station with my luggage. There are plenty of convenience stores nearby, though, and a Don Quijote next door. The building stands much taller than the surrounding ones, so it’s easy to spot and get your bearings. It’s a decent place to stay in Chiba for a price that seemed good to me, though there may be cheaper options.

The rooms are huge, with panoramic views over the bay, and the hotel is close to Chiba downtown. I really liked the Japanese sky bath. Breakfast is free on the 21st floor, with an amazing view of ghetto city and the bay. There’s a great tea machine in the room, plus a big bathroom with a large shower and separate bathtub. Staff speak very limited English. Wi-Fi is available in the rooms but not the lobby.

We really enjoyed our stay. The staff were helpful and friendly, and our room had a great view, a large bed, and plenty of space. :)

I’d give this three stars. The hotel seems geared mainly toward big tour groups, and their 7am breakfast rush overwhelms the kitchen, which can’t refill the food quickly enough. From 7am to 8am it’s chaotic, a poor setup for business travelers. Tourists leave the serving stations open, so food goes cold for everyone else, and there’s only one staff member on the floor. I gave feedback twice during my stay, and I blame poor hotel management. On days with fewer large groups and more local business guests, I saw three staff managing the refills instead. The breakfast choices weren’t great. The room was large with a nice view, and probably looked grand in the 90s, but it feels dated now. It was mostly clean, though our shower screen had a lot of grime and one nozzle had green rust from water calcifications. The other nozzle is suited to people under 5 feet. The location is handy for Don Quijote, 7-11, and Daiso. I wouldn’t recommend it to a business traveler, or anyone who wants breakfast between 7am and 8am.

Walking around the Marie Celeste, I came across another passenger asking where everyone was. I told them I thought the captain and crew had left a long time ago. There are no bars or restaurants, apart from breakfast. When I asked about room service, the women at reception glanced anxiously at their watches, as if they didn’t realize room service should run 24/7. It’s a grand old building, but the rooms are drab and its future looks to be fading. Book at your peril.
