Komaya Ryokan

The room was roomy and comfortable, and seeing Mt Fuji from inside it was priceless. The staff were polite and the service was good. Dinner was nice too.

Mt Fuji from the room window was stunning, and the house itself was traditionally beautiful. Our room was spacious and spotless, with good air conditioning and a really comfortable mattress and bedding. There isn’t much to do nearby, but that quiet, calm atmosphere is part of the appeal. The owner and her daughter were lovely. They gave us clear instructions right after check-in. There are quite a few house rules, which we understand and respect since you’re staying in someone’s home. It felt like a perfect retreat.

In the evening or morning, you can walk along the lakeshore when it’s calm and quiet. This traditional Ryokan is on the north side of Lake Kawaguchiko, and you can see Fujisan from your room. The rooms are all Japanese style and non-smoking. The price is affordable, with room only, breakfast, and half board options, and compared with other hotels, it’s a good value. The staff explain the sento, dinner, and breakfast hours. It met my expectations. Curfew is 23:00-5:30.

The meals were okay, and in good weather the ryokan has a lovely lake and mountain view. During our stay it was rainy and cloudy, though. It’s inexpensive, so I guess you get what you pay for. The service was pretty bad. Breakfast and dinner times couldn’t be changed, and if you didn’t arrive at the dining room at the set time, the older lady would come bang on your door. They came to clear the table exactly at the end of the one hour meal slot, too. The bath was only open in the evening, not the morning. They also wouldn’t store our luggage after checkout, and the older lady told us so fiercely. She was very impatient and unfriendly.
