The staff were friendly and helpful, and we really enjoyed our time there. The hotel’s old-fashioned style was a plus for me, though it might not suit someone looking for modern accommodations. It reminded me of historic hotels and stays back home in New Zealand, and gave me a chance to appreciate the place’s rich history. Getting there as a tourist is difficult, but I thought it was worth the effort. We only stayed one night, but the views of Fuji-san (Mount Fuji) were amazing, and we enjoyed soaking in the hot pool while taking in the scenery. We also enjoyed the private onsen together, and it was hard to leave those soothing waters. The public onsen happened to be private when we visited, though that might change during holiday periods. My own diet is very limited, but my Japanese wife really enjoyed the traditional meal, so we’re happy to recommend it.

The private onsen has a great view, and you can book it for free downstairs, but reserve a time slot early. We managed to go at 5 pm, 8 pm, and again the next morning. It’s an open-air bath, and although the scenery is beautiful, you can also see the street, Lake Shojiko, and distant hotels. Someone looking your way or zooming in might see you, so keep that in mind. Our room had a traditional feel, with mats, tea, and plenty of space, though it was quite old and the windows looked worn. From the room we had a great view of Mt. Fuji and Lake Shojiko. There was just one ojisan at reception, who greeted us and explained the rules. Dinner and breakfast were amazing and carefully put together, and they followed our request for no pork. The trip from Kawaguchiko Station takes a long time. We came by bus, which stopped right in front of the hotel, so use Google Maps. The nearest konbini is about a 15 to 20 minute walk, and there aren’t really other places to visit unless you wait for a bus that runs infrequently. It’s a shame they don’t rent bicycles or anything else. I’d recommend staying overnight if you want a retreat away from the city.

The onsen felt private and was really relaxing, and the meals were delicious. You get a stunning view of Mt. Fuji right from the front of the hotel, and every room has that same view. It’s a great place to try a traditional ryokan. Just be aware that it fills up quickly in peak season, so booking well ahead is best.

The rooms were great, and the rooftop private onsen is free to use if you book a 30-minute slot. You get a view of Fuji while soaking. Don’t miss the traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast, both were absolutely delicious.

The owners’ service was wonderful, and we loved the onsen and location. We knew when reserving that the room would be a little old, so that didn’t bother us. I’d recommend it for friends or couples. The walls are thin, though, and noise could disturb other guests, so it may not be as good for families.
