The Japanese breakfast was a letdown. I’ve had much better meals even at semi-abandoned onsen hotel buffets, and apart from the excellent view, I can’t think of anything I liked about it. I left quickly and found a second breakfast elsewhere. I stayed here in late March as part of my attempt to visit all of Japan’s classic hotels while spending a few months in the country. At the time I wrote this, only the Fujiya in Hakone was left. This place showed obvious signs of cutting costs. The check-in welcome the evening before was lukewarm at best, and being told to check out at a machine the next morning didn’t fit the classic luxury I expected. Japanese businesses are often overstaffed, but that wasn’t the case here. The guest wing felt run down, much like lower-rent properties elsewhere in the country. Paint was peeling off doors, carpet was torn in spots, and the ceiling had odd scuffs and stains. There was a nasty chemical smell throughout, like stale nicotine, and it was especially strong in my room. I’d asked for a large bed but got two singles or twins, whatever they were. The bathroom had just one large towel. The AC is high by the ceiling, and its glaring light can only be blocked by turning it off. Like much of Gamagori town, the hotel badly needs renovation and an infusion of money. I hope I don’t have another stay like this in Japan.

The food was every bit as impressive as the view of Takeshima island. My wife and I ate in their Main dinning room during our stay in Nagoya, and each dish was beautifully presented, well served, and cooked just right. Without hesitation, I’d call it one of the best fine dining experiences I’ve had in Japan.

With only a limited number of rooms, the place feels intimate, and it has kept its original charm without being over-renovated. The classic atmosphere goes well with the lovely views and excellent service. If you choose the French dinner course in the main dining room, which I highly recommend, add the wine pairing. It was exceptional.

We were especially impressed by the meals, with the French set course dinner standing out, and the garden, facilities, and views were lovely too. The atmosphere made it feel as though we weren’t in Japan. For the best view, I’d book a table on the "veranda" and eat early, before dark. The atmosphere is priceless. Gamagori Classic Hotel is said to have hosted the "Emperor family" in the past, and it seems like it must have been one of Japan’s finest hotels in its heyday. It’s about a 15-minute walk from Gamagori station. We thought there might be a free shuttle, but unfortunately there wasn’t.

It isn’t the newest place, but you can feel its history. The garden is lovely, and the view is nice too. This is a traditional, formal hotel where time seems to slow down, making it easy to relax.
