Hagi Kanko Hotel

The onsen really stands out, with a stunning view of the sound and mountains. It’s a very comfortable hotel, up a hill in a quaint little fishing village, with traditional Ryokan-style rooms. We didn’t eat there, so I can’t comment on the food. The price was ridiculously affordable, maybe $60 USD?

The staff were so friendly, and the room, hot springs and meals were all good. I’d like to come back next time.

We had a relaxing stay in a clean room, and the open-air bath was lovely. The starry sky from there was beautiful. Apparently raccoons sometimes wander over to the bath, so you might spot one if you're lucky. We also really enjoyed breakfast at Kasayama on the third floor, especially the delicious Hagi-style side dishes. A Lawson convenience store is about five minutes away by car. I stayed on the third floor, and the view was amazing. I was wondering if we'd have hot water, but there was an electric kettle in the room, along with a tea set and cups. There were about five glass cups for the three of us, a refrigerator, and drinkable tap water. The yukata was medium size, and there was a basket for the bath. While we were out, they laid out the futon. At first I was surprised, then I saw their kind note apologizing for leaving it while we weren't there and wishing us a good night's sleep. I'd never seen a note like that before. Thank you so much. I'd love to stay here again!

The food was a real highlight. Dinner and breakfast were generous kaiseki meals, both exquisite, with dishes like fugu, Nagahagi wagyu beef and abalone. The staff thoughtfully accommodated my family's lack of seafood, and their friendly service impressed me. Try the sake tasting too. At breakfast, the clam soup and squid sashimi were especially good, and coffee was available to help yourself to. This was my second visit, and I was welcomed properly on arrival. The staff member was from overseas but incredibly attentive, and I found myself wanting to cheer him on. The front desk was friendly too, and the welcome coffee was a nice touch. I stayed in the “Spacious Modern Twin.” The renovated room was very clean, and the bathroom was especially impressive, much cleaner and more comfortable than the one at home. I've rarely seen a bathroom that nice, even in a business hotel. The hot spring felt a little small for a hotel this size, though the water was excellent and I was very satisfied. People can stay in the open-air bath a long time, so it may be hard to get in depending on when you go. There are several washing areas, so even when it's crowded, they don't seem likely to run out. There are many places in Hagi I feel I only need to see once, but this is still a hotel that makes me want to return.
