Hakodate Yunokawa Onsen Umi to Akari / Hewitt Resort

My husband and I have returned to this hotel many times, and Mr. Soto, the Restaurant Manager, is a big reason we keep coming back. He’s the only person who consistently remembers us, and he treats us with real respect and kindness. He makes us feel like family. We’re leaving for the USA next week, but we’ll definitely be back soon because of him.

Good breakfast, with tasty food and wine, but the room and onsen weren’t great. It works for a short break, though I wouldn’t choose it for an authentic onsen experience. The outdoor bath has a lovely sea view. The water isn’t certified, however, and smells of sanitizer. The hotel is near the airport, but the tram stop, convenience stores, and restaurants are about a ten-minute walk away. I couldn’t tell whether it was planes overhead or the air conditioner, but the room sometimes felt like it was shaking.

The rooms were spotless and roomy, and the onsen was top notch. I loved relaxing in the outdoor hot spring every day and having the great breakfast. The staff were friendly, too. It’s a bit of a walk to the bay area, so I’d suggest taking the city trams. We’ll definitely come back.

I’d give the onsen five stars. There’s one indoor bath and one outside, where you can soak while looking at the night sky and moon as snow drifts gently onto your face. Such a lovely night.
