The staff are friendly and very accommodating, and they’ve done a great job creating a welcoming vibe. This hostel is attached to one of the only bars in town, where it was fun to have a beer and chat with other travelers and locals. They also offer lots of tips and help getting around, which is useful if you don’t know what to do or how to get places. Once you figure out how easy the buses are, the location works well. Great value, and recommended. It’s a very good hostel, part capsule hotel, and what you see is what’s advertised. Private rooms are a nice option, though mine didn’t ventilate well. I had to leave the door open to sleep properly. The rooms are basically big wooden boxes with an exhaust fan but no intake fan. The futon was comfortable, and the facilities were clean, if not charming. I was glad to see some improvements since older reviews, including free towels and extra sheets.

It’s high up on the slopes, but walking up and down was easy and access was good. The amenities were great, the toilets were clean and usable, and the place had a cozy feel. It was a pleasant first stay in a hostel for me. :>

The place and dorm were really clean, and the staff were amazingly kind and helpful. They serve simple food, made with care, and it tasted great. Beer and sake were very affordable, too. I only got to stay for a day last autumn because of my schedule, which was disappointing. Still, the atmosphere was excellent, the place was convenient, and the staff were so kind. I was extremely happy with the visit. I’ll definitely return if I come to Hakone again.

The description was accurate: a clean “room” with a shared bathroom and toilet. You can hear other travelers moving around in the evening, even though they’re trying to whisper and be considerate. The soundproofing isn’t very good. It was my first time in a guesthouse, and I realized that I can’t handle staying in a “room” with no window. The price does match the quality, though, so if windowless rooms work for you, you could give it a try.
