Hakoneonsen Sanso Nakamura

The bedding was really comfortable, but the place felt a bit old. The hot spring was quite small, with limited facilities. I also noticed insects in both the room and lobby. I hope they improve the cleanliness and hygiene.

Getting here may be a bit challenging without a car, but I really loved this Ryokan. It gave me an authentic Japanese experience, with excellent food and hospitality. I’d recommend staying here if you’re planning a visit.

The staff were super friendly and helpful, and there are a few no-nonsense local restaurants nearby. The on-site onsen had awesome views and was never busy. Our room had a terrace area overlooking the gardens, with mountains behind them. The toilets are outside the room and shared with two other rooms, and bathing is in the onsen. Breakfast was big, with delicious Japanese food that changes daily, served in a room overlooking the woods. We stayed two nights while exploring Hakone. It’s about a 40-minute bus ride from the train station, but near many of the area’s attractions. The ryokan is a few minutes’ walk uphill from a bus stop. It’s a great choice if you’re after a quiet, traditional Japanese stay with an on-site onsen and breakfast. If you need an ensuite, western bedding, or western amenities, look elsewhere.

The included breakfast was beautiful and delicious, and the location, room, natural spa or onsen, and service were all great. My family spent one wonderful night at this mountain ryokan hotel in Hakone. It was our first and only ryokan stay, so I can’t compare it with others, but for my wife it was one of the highlights of an already great trip to Japan.
