I don’t know if I’ll ever get another chance to feel traditional Japan’s magic the way I did here. Onsen, room, and common areas were all 10/10, and I loved the retro, traditional vibe. The staff clearly tried hard to make us feel welcome even before we arrived. Special thanks and admiration to the woman who served breakfast and dinner. We couldn’t understand each other’s language, but she showed so much heart and patience. I absolutely recommend this place.

The hot springs were the standout for me: natural sulfur water feeds both indoor and outdoor baths, and they left me feeling relaxed. Kinokuniya Ryokan sits in a quiet, wooded spot in Hakone, with traditional tatami rooms, warm service, and kaiseki meals showcasing seasonal ingredients. The atmosphere feels peaceful and timeless, a good place to unwind and disconnect from modern life. Staff were attentive and gracious, making the stay comfortable. A lovely pick if you’re after tradition, serenity, and Hakone’s famous healing hot springs.

Cozy, retro atmosphere, nice people, and a nice onsen. There’s also a cute little museum that stays open 24 hours.

Getting to the ryokan takes about 45 minutes by bus from Odawara Station, so allow extra time if you're sightseeing around Hakone. I left my bags in a station locker, though there’s also a luggage delivery service if you send things before the cutoff. The quiet, secluded setting felt worth the trip, with a lovely view from my room. It was spacious and cosy, with plenty of amenities including complimentary tea. Staff were sweet, breakfast was great, and the private onsen was a good deal at 2,000 yen for 30 minutes. A really peaceful stay and good value.

We came away really happy with our stay at kinokuniya ryokan. The traditional dinner with kimonos was a highlight, and we felt warmly welcomed from the start. After a full day out in Hakone, the onsen was just what we needed. A lovely choice for a short retreat.
