This family-run guest house sits up a hill in Hakuba Village and has more of a homely feel than a hotel. There is no ski-in, ski-out access. The building has a main wing and an extension, and the floors don't all connect, so check where your room is before carrying luggage upstairs. There is no lift. On arrival, you're welcomed with a good range of free drinks and snacks, and you can help yourself again after skiing or snowboarding. There's also a small snack counter and a large outdoor parking area, with free parking if you drive. The guest house can provide three meals a day, but you have to order ahead; the food is quite nice, though the range and choices are limited. Wi-Fi is free and the signal is strong and stable. Besides the facilities in your room, there are two shared bathrooms, one for men and one for women. Check-in is after 15:00 and checkout is before 11:00, but they can store your luggage if you arrive early or leave late.

Marchen House is a basic guesthouse in the small village of Hakuba, with free Wi-Fi. Its location very close to the ski slopes makes it a great base for a ski or snowboard holiday. Recommended.

A comfortable place to stay, very close to one of the chairlifts. The ski rental and shuttle bus are a five-minute walk away, and the gondola is about ten minutes on foot.

The view from my room was epic, and the lifts are right next door. Getting in and out is tough because it's up a steep hill, and the amenities aren't great.
