The traditional Japanese meals were full of flavor, and each day brought a pleasant surprise. The host family welcomed us warmly in every situation. Our room had tatami floors and futon beds, and there was enough space for our family of four. After a long winter day out in the snow, the hot bath was the perfect touch.

This 350-year-old house, owned by the same family for 200 years, made for a memorable stay in Hakuba. The rooms are traditional, and the recently renovated bathrooms are pretty nice. We found it great value and the Japanese hospitality was at its best. If you have a car, I'd recommend staying here for a real Japanese experience. In winter, you'll need snow tyres, and a 4WD too if it's snowing heavily.

The rooms are small but comfortable, and the people running this gorgeous, cozy, homely place are incredibly helpful. They don't speak much English, but they'll use their phones to translate and keep at it until they can help. They go out of their way to make you comfortable. Breakfast is traditional, and they'll also serve dinner for an extra charge. You'll need a car or a taxi to get to town or the ski slopes, as there are no buses. This is probably a bad translation, but、she is one of the most wonderful women I have ever met
