We came for a ski trip in Hakuba, but neither the comfort nor the atmosphere worked for us. It felt more like we were intruding in someone's private home than staying somewhere we'd paid to use, and we didn't feel welcome. We arrived before check-in to find reception closed and no staff around. After we briefly used the toilet, we were firmly told we couldn't use any facilities before check-in and had to leave. That was very inconvenient when we wanted to sort out ski rentals and use the ski storage. Our first room was above the boiler room, with water pipes making loud noise inside the walls all the time. We barely slept, and it affected our ski day. We were moved, but the next room had a large window onto an indoor hallway, where bright lights shone into the room and made sleep difficult again. The building was extremely cold. The only place we felt reasonably warm was our room with the heater on. The shared showers were in the basement onsen area, a long walk through cold hallways, and there was often a wait. The women's side had only two showers, so after skiing the queues were long and frustrating. On checkout day we were explicitly told that after 3 pm we couldn't use the facilities, including to change clothes. Since we were skiing on our last day, that was especially inconvenient. Many ski accommodations let guests change and pick up their luggage afterward. This place might suit people comfortable with strict rules and little flexibility, but it wasn't a good fit for us. We were looking for comfort, warmth, rest, and a welcoming atmosphere.

We really enjoyed the traditional room at Oomuko Ryokan for a true Japanese experience during our January 2026 stay. The owner was sweet and attentive, and helped us book dinner at a place with only 8 seats. Breakfast was delicious, with both authentic Japanese and Western options. The very clean onsen was a great way to warm up and relax after skiing. The location was perfect too, a 10-minute walk to the gondola and 5 minutes to the bus terminal, with buses to other ski resorts and Nagano. A 10/10 experience.

There are three straightforward rules: if you arrive early, you can store luggage only after 9:00 AM; check-in is strictly after 3:00 PM; and once you've checked out, you can't use the facilities. Apart from that, this place is a gem and very handy for getting around. It's a 4-minute walk to the bus station, 5 minutes to Lawson, 2-3 minutes to all the equipment rental shops, and about a 19-minute walk to Evergreen Ski / Snowboard School and the chairlift. There's an onsen on site too. I'll definitely book again next time.

We were lucky to get the last room at a great price during the busy ski season in winter 2024. The ryokan is within walking distance of the train station and not far from the ski area, with a beautiful view of the Japan Alps. Our room had a cozy vintage feel, a very comfortable three-layer futon, and a warm table that was perfect in winter. The small basement onsen was nice and separated by gender. The Japanese-style breakfast was the best part, delicious and beautifully served. The owner was very kind and helpful, spoke some English, and even helped us book taxis and restaurants. Guests get a discount at the nearby Woody ski rental. Totally worth it, highly recommended.

The onsen on site was clean and really great, and the breakfast was well prepared, with a choice of Japanese or Western style. A good start to the day. It's easy to walk to Lawson and the Hakuba bus terminal, and this is a really nice, budget-friendly place to stay, one of the best ryokan I've stayed in in Japan. I booked through Booking.com about 8 months ago and seem to have lucked into a larger room with a private restroom and large tatami mat. The only downside for me was that the mirror was too low, and there was no humidifier. Be careful about leaving the heat on all night unless you're a Waterman.
