I got back to Hashimoto the next afternoon after spending a night at a temple in Koyasan, and the owners were there right when they said they would be. I picked up my big pack quickly and continued on to Kyoto. The station is only a two-minute walk, which made the early train to Kudoyama easy, and they let me leave that pack overnight so I could hike with just a small one. I hadn't expected a private room in a small-town hostel, let alone one this spotless. Everything looked new, from the white walls to the modern bathroom with a tub. There was a kettle, a soft pillow, and a warm duvet, too. After my train was delayed and I couldn't complete the transfer to Kudoyama before dark, I knocked hoping for help. The owners gave me a room and treated me with the kind of care you'd get from close family. They speak enough English to avoid confusion. I heard the food is good, though I didn't have time to try it. I'll remember their kindness and this place for a long time. 🙏🏻

The couple who run the place are genuinely warm, and breakfast was a highlight: a filling, nutritious Teishoku, with the menu changing from day to day. It does take about an hour to reach Koyasan, which is the main drawback. Still, the price felt fair for what you get. Thanks for the kind, sincere service! :)

Getting to Koyasan is easy: take the 7:54 train and you'll be there around 9. The station is just a three-minute walk away, and a day trip was enough for me, so I didn't see the point of paying triple or more to stay up there. There's a good bakery nearby, and the yakitori place by the station works well for dinner. Yunosato is worth a visit too, with a free shuttle from Hashimoto Station. The owners are friendly, the room was clean, and the Japanese breakfast was great. Booking may be a little awkward if you don't speak Japanese, but call them. The man speaks pretty good English. Check-in is flexible; they just need to know when you'll arrive so someone can meet you and hand over the key.

Right by the train station, with a family mart next door, this is a handy base for the pilgrimage trail to Koya-san. You can set off on foot or take the train; I'd recommend either option. From Kudoyama, the hike is about 23-25km with 600-800hm, and it took us roughly seven hours to reach Daimon Gate. The place itself is cosy, and the owner was friendly and did all he could to make our stay pleasant.
