The onsen water is pretty good, and having both a sauna and cold water is fantastic.

I took a day trip with my father-in-law to Shinyu Onsen Ryokan, a place he often visits in Fukiage Onsen. The water has a strong sulfur smell. It's too hot to stay in for long, but it warms you right through. I'd like to visit again if I get the chance.

A new hot spring is due to open in the new building in June, and it seems it will serve as the public bathhouse. The old public bath will then be for hotel guests only. It's close to the city center, with good-quality water, and feels like a relaxing place.

I visited as part of the Kyushu Hot Spring Tour 88. The place feels spacious and open, and the local people were very kind. Going from the hot springs to the cold springs was incredibly refreshing.

I tried the family bath on a day visit and was surprised it was only 1,500 yen. The sulfur water was high quality and really relaxing. ◎ I went on a weekday and it was less busy than I expected, so it feels like a hidden gem. They had shampoo, conditioner, body soap, a hair dryer, and a water dispenser. I'd love to come back next time I'm in Kagoshima.
