Hiroshima Peace Hotel - Hostel

It's right next to a train station, which is handy, and the front desk staff were polite. The capsule was roomy and long enough for me, and the locker fit my backpack. There are three showers, so I haven't had to wait. It's clean and has AC, though I expect that in a hotel. That's about all the positives. This place just isn't my style. I'm backpacking to see sights, catch baseball, go to bars, and visit nearby islands, and the hotel doesn't seem close to any of those. The halls smell of cigarettes, and the bathrooms are on a different floor from my room. The mattress is only 3 cm thick on wood, so it's not very comfortable. The echoing wooden design means I hear everything. There are 16 beds in the dorm, which could be awful when it's full. The fan in the capsule is loud, and one comforter makes it hot in summer. There's no common area apart from the lobby. At ¥3200 a night, it's not a good deal. I'm here Friday and Saturday, and the dorm is empty. ¥2000 seems fairer.

The women's dorm rooms are clean and roomy, and the simple shower room is well kept. The kitchen is useful, though it's not somewhere to hang out. The bread shop downstairs is convenient, but like most bread shops in Japan, its loaves are subpar and it sells various flavored sweet breads. The hotel is too far from the city center to make a good base, but it's fine for a night or two.

The staff were nice, but the place smelled bad and was dirty. There was mold, the bathroom ceiling was open, the tatami was filthy, and the walls had stains and holes. We stayed for just three days and were still very uncomfortable. I don't recommend it.

It's close to the train station, and there's laundry, but there's no complimentary breakfast. They provide towels, razors, and toothbrushes, but no hair dryer. The Peace Hotel describes itself as traditional, and the rooms are big, though the sleeping mats they provide are paper thin. Our bedroom and the hallways smelled awful, like nothing had been washed properly.
