The rooms were clean and the service was really good, so I’d definitely come back. It’s a retro ryokan not far from hiroshima station, built in the 1950s and full of history.

The staff give you a comfortable amount of space instead of hovering, which really adds to the stay. The atmosphere is fantastic, too. Whenever I had a question, they explained things carefully. The bathroom has been renovated and is shared.

The shared bathrooms and toilets and small rooms are part of the setup, since the inn was made from a former red-light district. What gives it a different feel from an ordinary inn is the open-air design and the pond with carp in the middle of the first floor. Rates are reasonable, and parking is available, so it’s worth staying at least once. Just know the road to the parking lot is narrow.

I often stay at Koki when I’m in Hiroshima City. It’s close to the Yagenbori entertainment district, and even though the rates have gone up, 4500 yen is still reasonable. The inn used to be a red-light district, which gives it the charm of a traditional Japanese inn. Meals and pajamas aren’t provided.
