Minshuku Hanyachigaso

It felt luxurious just to watch the ocean from the room as its appearance changed throughout the day. The quiet morning and the light coming in were especially lovely. The meals were better than I expected, with good ingredients in everything from Iki beef to fresh seafood. The portions were generous, and each dish seemed carefully prepared, so I enjoyed the whole meal from start to finish. This is somewhere the simple pleasure of relaxing really matters. I’d definitely stay again if I visit Iki.

I’d read reviews before booking the last night of my two-night, three-day trip, but treated them as just a guide and didn’t expect too much. The elaborate dishes still impressed me. The fish dishes and sashimi were great, and the Iki beef was better than the premium meat I’d had at a yakiniku restaurant for lunch. Breakfast was more substantial than what I got at the luxury hotel I stayed at on the first night, and it made me wish I’d booked both nights here. With the beach right in front and the waves audible, I slept soundly in such a comfortable setting. The service was warm and polite, and I felt safe traveling alone. The one drawback was the Wi-Fi, which was barely usable in the room. I’d definitely come back next time when the beach is open for swimming.

The natural setting around the guesthouse was wonderful. I went for several walks during my two-night stay and loved seeing the sea change color, the clouds shift shape, hearing the wind, and spotting planes up close. The swing beside the guesthouse was great too. I couldn’t swing the way I wanted, which was frustrating at the time but turned into a hilarious memory. I’d chosen this place after a long time away from guesthouses, hoping to relax among the scenery on this remote island and eat good seafood. My only real disappointment was the public bath. Maybe because fuel costs are going up, it was only available at set times in the evening, and the shower pressure was weak enough to make it hard to use. The bath in my room worked perfectly well, though, and the amenities were thoughtfully chosen and excellent. And the meals were delicious, just as other guests had said. Nearly everything was carefully prepared and seasoned by the chef. The menu was mostly Japanese, but a French dish appeared unexpectedly and really hit the spot. Then there was dessert. I’d been wishing for a cafe with good sweets where I could relax while sightseeing on the island, and unexpectedly found delicious sweets at dinner instead. Both nights brought incredibly good, proper homemade treats. Thanks for the wonderful meals!

We came as two friends and had a compact room with an ocean view. The bath also looked out over the sea, and we could relax there. The food was so tasty and plentiful that we couldn’t finish it. We borrowed a shovel and made a sand bath on the beach next to the runway, and it was exciting to see a plane land so close. The only thing we didn’t like was the strong fabric softener smell on the towels. Fragrance-free towels would be better. We’re so glad we found a place on our first visit to Iki that we want to come back to!
