MINKA Riverside Villas

At night, the bridges over the canal light up and make a particularly lovely view. The whole village is quiet, and walking beside the water is peaceful and restorative. We stayed in a single house with three rooms and a shared bathroom and toilet. It was right next to the canal, in a calm village that made for a rejuvenating visit.

The inn and the town both had a nostalgic feel. Our room was clean and nicely renovated, and even the toiletries, including the shampoo, seemed carefully chosen. The staff booked dinner for us and gave us a town map. Really great service, thank you.

I stayed in the Umineko building last year to soak up the scenery and feel of Shinminato Uchikawa. Inside, it was so clean and stylish, and much quieter and more relaxing than I’d have guessed from the outside. It was my first self-catering stay, so I wasn’t sure what was available and ended up eating at nearby restaurants and bars. I had a good time anyway, though I think I’d have enjoyed it even more if I’d researched a bit and cooked with local ingredients.

The space felt unlike a standard hotel or inn, and I’d definitely like to return. From the room, the Uchikawa River was right there, with no noise except the soft sound of the waves. It was peaceful enough to forget everyday worries. The place reminded me of my grandmother’s old house, but it was stylish and clean. The kitchen and bathroom were just as tidy, and the shower pressure was strong and refreshing.
