My wife and I had a pleasant honeymoon stay. The rooms were very pleasant, and the breakfasts were really good, though we didn't have dinner. It's about a 10 minute walk to the main part of the onsen town. Most of the staff didn't speak English, but they were very helpful and happy to communicate with translate.

I was a little nervous after seeing recent bad reviews, since we had booked several months ahead. But we had an incredible stay. The place was clean and beautiful, breakfast was delicious, and the staff were super friendly and attentive. A short walk takes you to a few restaurants, nature spots and local shops, which made things convenient and enjoyable. I 100% recommend it.

Wish we'd had a little more time here. The staff were exceptional and breakfast was really great. The garden views and local surroundings are beautiful, too. I'd go back to Japan just to visit this place again. If you're after a traditional ryoken stay with a private onsen, it really doesn't get better. For one of the best experiences in Japan, go here. And go to Matoi, the nearby sushi place. Absolutely fantastic, you won't regret it.

The private baths were the highlight for me. There are two onsens, including one outside, and having a quiet soak in nature in the morning or evening was a dream. I miss those peaceful dips already. After Tokyo's energy, this was a wonderful place to slow down. We spent two nights here in Shuzenji, and it was one of the most relaxing and memorable parts of our Japan trip. The charming little villas mix tatami mats and other traditional Japanese touches with modern comforts. They felt spacious compared with typical city hotels in Japan. The garden surroundings were serene, and the furnishings and amenities were thoughtfully arranged. Staff were warm and attentive, and incredibly kind and eager to help, even though their English was very limited, which is quite normal in Japan. After a small hiccup with a fire alarm in our room, they gave us sake as an apology. The hotel is only a few minutes' walk from the "downtown" area of Shuzenji. Parking was conveniently right outside, and they also offer a pickup service from the train station and even Tokyo airports. They appear to serve food on-site, but we didn't try it, so I can't comment. If you've got a car and the weather allows, consider a hike up Darumayama in the early morning or late afternoon. The nature is breathtaking, and the views of Mt. Fuji are unforgettable. A great place to reset and enjoy a slower pace of life.
