Kocho

I’d happily stay at Kochou again. The hospitality made the whole visit feel special, and I’d recommend it to anyone planning a stay in the Kaga area. It’s easy to head out and explore from here: the location is central and right beside beautiful Kakusenkei Gorge. The rooms are SUPER spacious and well-appointed, and there’s tasteful, distinctive art throughout. Meals were delicious and generous, served on gorgeous tableware that made them feel special. Everyone on staff was warm and helpful, especially Ken. He helped us plan our day in detail, explained things using a translator, and handled all those small things that make a big difference. They really do go out of their way to make you comfortable. Kochou is honestly one of the best ryokans I’ve stayed at in Japan.

The surrounding nature is breathtaking, and the baths are wonderfully relaxing. Kochou Onsen was a memorable stay, with excellent food and exceptionally friendly, caring staff.

My guide picked us up at Kaga Onsen station, helped plan our whole day, then came back in the middle of day two so we could see the beautiful fall colors at Natadera. That still left time for a riverside walk, some great cafes, and a visit to Yamanaka Onsen town. The omotenashi hospitality was beyond anything I’ve experienced, and this is my favorite ryokan I’ve stayed in. We loved the hot spring in our suite, though the public bath was nice too. The food was as good as or better than any ryokan I’ve tried, including pricier ones. The Noto beef steak was the most tender I’ve ever eaten, and the seafood was fresh and seasonal. The portions were huge too. Absolutely recommended.

The building may be a little old, but that’s part of its charm. It’s a huge place that seems to host only a few people, which suited us. We’d only booked a vacation, but everything from the lodging to the food and customer service was on point. The staff were warm, welcoming, and always willing to help.
