The hotel’s buffet was my favorite part. It had a range of tasty local rice and dishes, with the main course and desserts included. Drinks such as alcohol and cocktails cost extra. The dining room was impressive in size and quite crowded, and I found the meal very satisfying. There are both Japanese-style and Western-style rooms to choose from when booking. Kaga City is known for traditional natural hot springs, and this hotel has them indoors and outdoors. I preferred the outdoor bath because the indoor water was hotter, and the view from outside was pleasant, especially in spring when the cherry blossoms are out. Wherever you come from, you can enjoy the authentic Japanese-style service here.

Our tatami room looked out over a gently flowing river and a wooded hillside. The outdoor onsen had a peaceful view through the trees, with the sound of the river, and there’s an indoor bath as well. It’s a quiet, beautiful spot, just a stroll from the village precinct. The staff were friendly and offered traditional hospitality. One receptionist who spoke English was especially helpful. They also arrange transfers to the railway station, and a local guide is on hand to connect arriving guests with the hotel shuttle.

The onsen view and decent buffet were the only things that saved this stay. Our room had holes in the ceiling and bugs, and everything felt old or dirty. Facilities that are free at other hotels came with expensive charges here, even though the price was on par with a top-class resort. There was no wifi in the room, either. Then at the end they asked us to pay an onsen fee. Quite a surprise.
