We spent three nights at Suzaya Konnichiro for Kaga UTMB, and the staff made the stay special. The room and location weren’t perfect, but the hospitality was outstanding. After arriving past 8:30 pm and missing the usual dinner time, we communicated briefly with the front desk using Google translate. They then drove us to a nearby local eatery and brought us back about an hour later. On race day they also adjusted dinner to 9 pm at our request, so we could enjoy their delicious meal after an exhausting run. When we left, Mr. Yoshitaka Sudani, the Representative Director, helped coordinate with the car rental company about picking up the car. Everything went as he had arranged, with no hassle. We’ve stayed in many places across different countries over the past decade, and Suzaya Konnichiro is easily one of the best. The service was second to none, and I highly recommend it.

We got there around 4:30 pm and had a relaxing soak in the open-air hot spring before dinner. The food was generous and delicious, and the local sake was great. Our spacious Wakakusa-style Japanese-Western room was comfortable, and we watched dramas on YouTube and Netflix on the large TV. The next morning we walked for about an hour round trip to scenic Ayatori Bridge. There are no streetlights at night, so daytime is better for looking around. The inn offers a free shuttle from Kaga Onsen Station. You can pick 3, 4, or 5 pm for the outbound ride and discuss the time when confirming your reservation; return trips are at 9 or 10 am. The staff were attentive throughout, from the information in the hall and nearby coffee shop suggestions to the landlady’s coffee recommendation and lanterns around the building. It was my first time at a hot spring inn with my girlfriend, the day after we returned from Osaka and I introduced her to my parents. I’d definitely stay again. Thank you! 😊✨

I went with my grandson and we had a lot of fun at this old hot spring inn. The food wasn’t anything special, but I had no complaints for the price. I only wish the children’s breakfast had more variety than the adults’ one. A few stink bugs were roaming around our room at this time of year. I let them outside, though they still gave off a strong smell now and then, lol. I’ve visited hot springs all over the country, and every area has its good and bad points. I enjoy the atmosphere, and this place has its own charm. If the food seems bad to you, spend more and book a better inn, lol. Some people have written all sorts of things, but I think they may not know how to enjoy an inn and hot springs. Be open-minded when sharing your opinions. Everyone’s different, and I like traveling with a positive, fun attitude. You’ll understand after visiting hundreds of inns, lol. On the way home, the landlady kept waving until our car was out of sight. That felt like the best customer service, and I left with lots of good memories. Thank you very much.

The room looked nice after the renovation, which made use of the building’s age, but the place was poorly cleaned. There was a lot of dust and hair on the floor when I first walked in. The parking area is an unmarked lot, and they seem to pack cars into a tight space, so you have to leave your keys for them to move your car. The location is deep in the mountains, some distance from Kaga, so you can’t walk into town and need a car. There are also many abandoned inns nearby, which made the area feel inconvenient and unpleasant. The food was old-fashioned and focused on looks rather than taste. Portions felt small for the price, and the sukiyaki came with just one piece of meat. Breakfast was especially sparse, leaving me wondering what to eat with it. At these prices I expected better meat or fish. The service felt like a sales smile with no warmth behind it. Staying at a ryokan seemed pointless, as did having Nakai or the landlady there. They call it “Kaga,” but it didn’t live up to that for me, and the service quality was so poor I don’t want it called Kaga. They should offer food and service that justify the cost. It’s a shame the rooms have been renovated for foreigners, because even a nice room leaves a poor impression when service is bad. I won’t return.
