Kagoshima Little Asia - Hostel

The shared toilets and showers were clean, though towels weren't supplied. In the common area there were tables, floor cushions, and a couple of chairs, as well as two big shared fridges, a microwave, gas stove and utensils, a stovetop kettle, and free black tea, but no coffee. We stayed two nights in March 2025 in a private bunk room at Little Asia Guesthouse in Kagoshima. It was very affordable and conveniently beside Kagoshima Chuo Station, often quickest to reach through the underground. The bed was quite hard, though the duvet and pillow were comfortable. With the train tracks only metres away and no curtains or soundproofing, sleep was difficult. I'd bring an eye mask and earplugs. We didn't sleep especially well, but it was still good value.

+ The host was nice and friendly, and the price was affordable. + Very close to the station. - You can hear trains on the tracks nearby, though it didn't disturb my sleep. - The inside looks a little worn, but it's fine for a one-star hostel. - The floor felt a bit sticky and dirty. - One shower is outside the main door. If you walk back barefoot, your feet get dirty again, so wear slippers. - The route to the entrance feels sketchy because it's in an alley.

The price was the only upside. It was the cheapest hostel I'd stayed at in Japan, but I didn't feel comfortable there. The dorm was very cramped, and the mattress was so thin I could feel the bed frame. The lighting wasn't pleasant, and there was no individual light.

For the price, this very simple guesthouse is hard to complain about. The kitchen and lounge are fairly nice, the beds were comfortable, and the staff were friendly. In central Kagoshima, the private rooms are especially cheap and worked well for us as a couple.
