Quintessa Hotel Kagoshima Tenmonkan Relax&Sleep

Really good prices for the quality and the location is excellent. The one annoying thing is how little room there is between the huge bed and huge TV. It’s hard to get through to the toilet.

I stayed for more than seven nights and found the towel policy frustrating. I asked for two sets, but got a note saying the hotel provides one set per person and charges 300 JPY for extra towels. Fresh towels are one of the basic things I value, and this felt like too much to ask of a hotel. There was no bottled water, amenities were minimal, and I had no housekeeping during my stay. I can live with those limitations, and I understand the cost-saving reason for cleaning rooms only for guests staying longer than four days. But being so strict about an extra set of towels felt excessive. To me, hospitality means meeting reasonable guest expectations, and the hotel fell short here.

The room was very small and outdated, and the bathroom had a bit of a strange smell. It was tolerable for two nights, but I wasn’t a huge fan. The best thing about the hotel was its location right in the center of Tenmonkan.

The double room was really tiny. It was hard to move around, and there wasn’t enough room for our small suitcase. The toilet seat also didn’t have a heating feature. 😖 The entrance and lounge are elegantly designed, and you can get free drinks there, including shochu. I didn’t think the music playing behind reception suited the space. Jazz or something more relaxing would be better. There’s only one elevator, so it got crowded at checkout in the morning.
