The pillows were much too hard for us. We found out softer ones were available during room service, but had to be quick to grab them. The concierge staff often seemed stern. We were told that was normal and they weren’t meant to put guests off. The hotel is very central in Kagoshima, with most city spots an easy walk away. The rooms were smaller than we expected, and the bathroom shutters were a bit confusing at first.

We came across this hotel while looking for somewhere to eat nearby and were lucky to get a room. It’s conveniently located next to a restaurant, and the cozy atmosphere and room size were good by Japanese standards. The bath and massage chair were welcome extras. The beds and pillows were just right, neither too soft nor too hard, unlike what we’d found at other Japanese hotels. The blackout curtains helped us sleep really well, too. Our twin room had two single beds pushed together, leaving little room for luggage. A queen-size bed might make better use of the space. The lighting was a little dim, and no laundry service could be inconvenient for a longer stay. Still, it’s great value and a fantastic option for a short visit.

The hotel itself was quiet, clean, central in downtown Tenmonkan, and good value. The rooms are compact but well designed, and the room cleaning service was great. I got my own coffee, tea, and milk. There are no washing machines, though I could wash small things in the room. It took a little getting used to the limited services. The restaurant was irritating. I wouldn’t use it or the Tully's breakfast deal unless you’re feeling rich. The local restaurants are fantastic.

The hotel is well placed, a short walk from Tenmonkan and its bars and izakayas. After crossing over to Sakurajima, we took the bus back to the hotel. From the Shinkansen, take the tram to Tenmonkan, then it’s a short walk. The tram costs 170¥, cheaper than the 270¥ bus. We stayed four nights. Our room was meant for two single beds, but because we booked for three, they squeezed in a movable third bed. There was barely room to walk between them. The bathtub was a real treat after long days of walking and shopping. There were lots of places to eat, mostly izakayas and bars, but we were very disappointed by the ramen restaurants. We ended up taking the tram to the next town for better quality food at more reasonable prices. The hotel’s location is good.

My favorite hotel in Kagoshima city. The rooms are comfortable, and the staff are very nice and helpful. I’d also recommend the amazing washoku-style breakfast. It’s only two bus stops from Kagoshimachuo station, and the ferry port is within walking distance. You can catch a ferry there to Sakurajima or Yakushima.
