After the 20-hour trip from the U.S., we wanted to get out of Tokyo and spend a few days somewhere more relaxed, so we headed to Kamakura. Tosei Hotel Cocone was a lovely place to stay. The staff were wonderful, and the fresh-cooked breakfast was healthy and nicely portioned. The public bath was a new experience for us, and we’ll try that again. There are shops and restaurants all around the hotel. We walked to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Temple, and took a short bus or train ride to the Great Buddha and Hasedera temple area.

We had a lovely two-night stay here as a family of three. The room was clean, very spacious, and comfortable, though the lighting was a bit dim and we didn’t mind. The location worked well, within walking distance of the station and main street. Reception were friendly. They didn’t speak much English, but Google Translate worked fine for us. There’s a public bathhouse, though we didn’t use it, plus a laundry room and a manga room entirely in Japanese. Breakfast costs extra. We also enjoyed the free miso clam soup and rice balls they offered daily.

We drove from Odawara to Kamakura for one night on 20th Nov 2025 and stayed at Tosei Hotel Cocone Kamakura. It’s a modern 70-room hotel that opened in 2022, set among the old streets near Kamakura station. The streets had plenty of tourists, but inside the hotel it was quiet and relaxing. It has four levels and keyed entry. We booked a twin room on level 4. There are two lifts, so the wait wasn’t too long, even at a busy time. The hotel’s reserved parking is a five-minute walk away and comes with a charge, but you can drive in and out during your stay. They give you the parking instructions. The onsen has hot water baths for men and women and room for about six people to sit comfortably. The water is hotter than usual spring water, so people don’t stay in for long and there’s a fairly quick turnover. You need your room key to get in. On the lobby level, there’s a free coffee machine and lots of comic books you can borrow to read in your room, then return to the shelf when you’ve finished. After 7pm, each guest can get one miso soup and one onigiri for supper, first come, first served. We were happy with our stay and would definitely come back to Kamakura.

The location is good, and the parking lets you come and go for JPY 1,900 a day, but you have to reserve it ahead of time. The rooms are basic business hotel style and feel expensive for what they are. The website photos make them look much nicer than they do in person. The check-in area is small, with coffee and tea available, but Dormy Inn is much nicer and cleaner by comparison. The public bath is tiny, with just six washing stations. The website pictures make it look a lot bigger. The hotel was busy and many guests were using the bath, so it wasn’t kept up well. There was hair all over, and it didn’t feel clean. The onigiri and miso soup were a nice touch, though you have to take them back to your small room to eat. Cocone Kamakura felt overpriced for the room quality and food compared with other hotels. I wouldn’t stay again. If you’re willing to pay a bit more, Hotel Metropolitan Kamakura is a much better choice.

It’s about a five-minute walk from the train station, with lots of boutiques and restaurants along the way. The room was very clean and spacious, much nicer than rooms in central Tokyo. All the staff were exceptionally kind and helpful. After I checked out, I realized I’d left my charger in the room. Jose got back to me quickly and professionally, and offered to mail it to the hotel where I’m staying now.
