We liked having a small kitchen that was well equipped, plus a washer and dryer. The Samurai district is fascinating, though we found taxis the easiest way to get around. The cosy Machiya had underfloor heating, which was a nice bonus, and we loved the bathing setup. Communication with Machiya Inns was very good.

The house is big enough for six and would be comfortable for four, but just the two of us had a romantic, beautiful place all to ourselves. We paid about what a moderately upscale hotel room costs and got a renovated historical townhouse instead, along with some of the kindest, most caring service of our trip through Japan. The private garden, soaking tub, shoji and tatami, lovely decorations, washer and dryer, and full kitchen made it easy to settle in and enjoy breakfast at our own pace. Hanatsume Machiya sits on a quiet back street at the edge of the Samurai district, with a neighbourhood cat around, and Nagamachi and Korinbo are an easy walk away. There’s a peaceful feel, plenty of history, and good food nearby. Machiya Inns and Hotels staff were available when we had questions, needed to discuss billing, or needed emergency help. I once thought I’d locked myself out of the gate, and they helped. They gave us privacy when we didn’t need anything, but were great whenever we did. The gentleman who checked us in even suggested Yakiniku Nobu and made a reservation before he left. It was a glorious stay, excellent value for the money, and would be even more affordable if you share the house with friends. We’re almost sure to return to Kanazawa and will absolutely use Machiya Inns and Hotels again. 12/10, can’t recommend it enough.
Everything was clean and nicely set up, and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They also gave us great suggestions for local food. The place is handy for bus stops, restaurants, and sights nearby. I’d highly recommend it.
We loved staying in this sleek, modern place set inside a beautiful old wooden house.
The convenience store is a long way off, so pick up alcohol before you head to the inn. It’s on a quiet residential lane, which might not suit anyone wanting to be noisy, and I was surprised by how small the street was. Still, I was very happy with the room. The underfloor heating was a nice touch, and other amenities were provided. It’s also well placed for sightseeing, close to the samurai residences.
