Onoue Ryokan

We stayed for three days, using the inn as a base to see Karatsu and Saga. Its location worked well for our driving tour, with easy access to sightseeing spots around both areas. It's also a peaceful escape from city life, and offers charging points for electric vehicles and a pet-friendly stay. The room looked new and recently renovated, and from our room on the high ground the view was excellent. All the innkeepers were friendly and helpful. Most didn't speak English, but Google Translate bridged the communication gap efficiently. We had breakfast and dinner included, and the food was excellent. After two days, the manager worried we'd get bored with the menu and changed the main dish for us. A thoughtful touch, and a really nice stay.

Great food, a nice location, and an okay facility.

The staff at reception and in the dining room were attentive and made our stay pleasant. The building is old, but inside it was very clean. There isn't an elevator, so it may not work well for people with mobility issues. For a guesthouse price, I think it's a good deal. We were three family members staying in November 2025. I was looking for somewhere to eat Yobuko squid and found the "Modest Dinner Plan" at 10,600 yen per person, including one night and two meals, with live squid sashimi at dinner. Our room was an 8-tatami Japanese-style room without a bathroom or toilet. The bathroom was conveniently in the large communal bath, and the toilet was right next door on our floor, so neither was a problem. I think the reasonable price reflects the unrenovated room. I was told there was no refrigerator, so I asked ahead and they said reception could keep things for us, though we didn't need to use that option. We had an ocean view. Both meals were delicious, and although we'd chosen the modest dinner plan and didn't expect huge portions, there was more than enough. I was very happy with the live squid sashimi, which I'd never tried before. They also kindly offered to make the sashimi leftovers into either tempura or grilled squid.

We had lunch here with our dog after making a reservation, so we got seated right away and could eat at our own pace while enjoying the view. The squid was fresh, still moving, and delicious. We also liked the sashimi, chawanmushi, squid shumai, and jelly dessert. Afterward, we took photos in dog costumes and let our dog run around in the dog run. We were both very happy with the visit and would love to come again.
