The large lobbies and work areas were comfortable, and the breakfast and location were good. There were thoughtful extras too, including free snacks and drinks at certain times and complimentary bath salts. A few things kept this from being a five-star stay for me. The rooms are dark, and there's no dinner choice beyond an expensive set menu, with no a la carte ordering. Also, some of the international staff didn't seem to understand Japanese culture and customs. Even when they knew they'd made a mistake, they stayed ignorant of it and didn't behave as Japanese staff would. That's a shame, because the local staff tried hard, but a handful of non-Japanese employees brought the experience down.

I expected an okay budget hotel, but found a thoughtful boutique stay that felt like great value. The hotel is clean and new, and the room was spotless. Check-in service was better than at any other hotel I've stayed in, even very expensive ones. The standard room is enough for two people and roomy for one.

Tei gave us such a warm welcome, and the great service continued throughout our stay. Professional and attentive, Tei really went above and beyond to make our time in Karuizawa special. The hotel felt cozy and the staff were wonderful. Thank you!

The room was really, really small, and there was no lobby or waiting area. If you got up early, there was nowhere to sit and rest. I think the hotel could open part of the restaurant as a place for guests to wait. At breakfast, the restaurant was empty when I arrived, but the waitress seated me on the side without a scenic view while other guests used the window tables. She also seemed a little rude. Every time I went to the bar for bread, she asked if I was ready to order, even though I was waiting for my friend. After checking out in the morning, we came back to collect our luggage. My friend tried to get some tea and a staff member stopped them abruptly, saying it was only for hotel guests. We'd checked out that same day, so I thought we were still guests. A sign at the tea and coffee station could prevent this embarrassing mix-up.
