The rooms are clean, well stocked, and comfortable, and the quiet setting is relaxing. We’ve stayed here before, but on this visit realized the previous British owner had sold the place. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner, though as a Brit staying at a hotel that promotes its Britishness, I wish the food reflected that more. They can arrange a birthday cake with enough notice, which is a nice touch. There’s a small playroom and play area for kids, and it looks like they’ve added some nice outdoor seating.

The surroundings are very quiet, though the town is close by. It felt like a homey stay, with friendly staff who spoke English really well. The decor has British references, and they serve an English breakfast.

Albert's British Dining, the restaurant attached to Hotel WELLIES, was good value. The music, furniture, food, and drinks all fit its English atmosphere closely. The first-floor lobby and shared spaces had a casual bed-and-breakfast feel, with quaint decor. Outside, there was a veranda and seating area overlooking a lush garden, a quiet brook, and green hillsides. There was even a small play space for children, which worked well for my family. Our room seemed newly refurbished, with plenty of amenities and a spotless shower and bathtub. The beds were clean and comfortable too.

The staff are friendly, warm, and relaxed. Isuru at the front desk was especially helpful. I’m staying in one of the newly refurbished mountain-view rooms, and it’s the most comfortable room I’ve had during three weeks in Japan. It’s warm and cozy, a good size, and laid out so it’s easy to move around or relax at the small table. There’s a lovely new blond-wood shelf along the window for knick-knacks. Waking up to a snow-dusted hill and forests in autumn color has been a great way to start the day. The updated decor has a modern British feel, with most of the previous owner’s garish 1970s interiors gone. Judging by the illustrations of those interiors on the wall, it’s much easier to live with now. If you’re here for the autumn colors, rent a bike and wander the town’s trails and winding streets. It’s really rewarding!
