The hotel shuttle takes you to a point where only designated vehicles can go, which makes a day trip feasible, even for women. I stayed to climb Mt. Hotaka in Joshu, one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. The owner is a guide and can explain safety points along the route or guide you if needed. The route from Minakami is shorter but rockier; from Numata it's longer and less rocky. Call to arrange your preferred date instead of booking online straight away. There are no convenience stores or hot springs within walking distance. By public transport, you'd get off at Hotakaguchi on the Kanetsu Kotsu line; there's a supermarket and a day-use hot spring near that bus stop.

With the owner guiding us, we reached the summit of the snow-covered Mt. Hotaka in Joshu safely. We stayed at the lodge for the climb, and the homemade food was delicious too. Thanks for accommodating changes to our dates and group size.

The breakfast bread was so good that I ate twice as much as I usually do. The meals were delicious and just the right size, and the pension felt warm and clean throughout. I'd definitely like to stay again.

We've brought all kinds of people here: old friends, our children's friends and their families, and friends from work. The service is just right, and it's a comfortable place to stay. In ski season, we use it as accommodation for Hotaka Oguna Ski Resort. In summer, we arrange rides for guided Oze tours and climbs of Mt. Shibutsu.

I came for a ski trip and really appreciated the owners' warmth and thoughtfulness. It made for a lovely stay. The food was delicious, and I'd like to come back.
