Sumatakyo Onsen Suikoen

The public bath was lukewarm and didn’t have any other facilities. At breakfast, we were given three time options, then pressured to move to a later one after choosing. It wasn’t a major problem, but it would’ve been clearer to cross out unavailable times first. That added to our disappointment, especially given Japan’s reputation for hospitality. Dinner was the biggest letdown. We ordered the barbecue set, and had to grill all three courses ourselves: vegetables, beef, and fish fillet. The prepared starter included cheap salmon sashimi, yam and wasabi that seemed store-bought, a grilled fish, and a sad-looking mushroom soup. The root vegetables and rice cake in the first course were bland, with only soy sauce and table salt to season them. It felt like little effort had gone into the set, and the meat wasn’t great either. The dessert was subpar too. This was the only dinner at an onsen resort where we left neither full nor satisfied. We’ve never had a worse onsen resort stay, and didn’t expect such poor service from a traditional place.

Bring enough Japanese Yen for the train, bus, and anything you might want from the small nearby shops. The buses leave right on time, so be patient and get there at least 10 minutes early. Getting to the hotel was the hardest part of the trip, but the stay was worth it. The staff were kind and helpful despite the language barrier, and we really enjoyed our time there. The baths were lovely; private ones are available if you ask, for an extra charge. Keep an open mind about the food, and ask for clarification if you need it. We’d consider coming back for longer next time.

Our room was clean and cosy, with a nostalgic Japanese feel, and the ryokan was quiet at night. It was a restful place to come back to after visiting Yume no Tsuribashi. We stayed at Suikoen (Suikoen) for one night on 16 November 2025, during our visit to Sumatakyo, surrounded by mountains and fresh forest air. The layout is traditional, but the wing with our room has stairs only and no lift. The main building does have a lift, so keep that in mind if you have heavy luggage or mobility concerns. There’s free designated parking, and a clean, designated smoking area in the garden just a few steps away, separated from the guest rooms. The clean, well-kept onsen was a relaxing way to warm up in the cool November weather. Dinner and breakfast were included. Both meals used seasonal local ingredients and were a highlight: dinner was hearty and comforting, while breakfast was light, refreshing, and balanced. They were served in a warm, cosy dining hall. Suikoen is convenient for Yume no Tsuribashi (Yume no Tsuribashi), the Sumatakyo hot spring area, forest trails, local shops, and rest areas. It was especially peaceful in the morning and evening. A quiet, traditional stay with free parking, a garden smoking area, seasonal meals, and a clean onsen.

The staff were super friendly and knew the area well. We booked a traditional Japanese room with futon, which was a great experience. It’s a good location if you know how to use the bus, so check the hotel website beforehand for directions. One tip: buy alcohol at a local store. The restaurant charges more than twice the regular market price.
